Malaria

Malaria continues to be a major health problem for
Tanzania. Tanzanian government statistics reveal
that malaria is the 2nd leading cause of death in
children under 5 years old and the 3rd leading
cause of all deaths in Tanzania.

Since malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes which
breed in water, every rural community should be
equipped to protect itself from mosquito bites. The
range of preventive measures includes using
treated mosquito nets, insect repellents and
denying mosquitoes areas for breeding. In July of
2008 KCDC provided 100 insecticide treated nets
to the Kishapu Health Center for distribution to the
local community. Once a person is suspected of
having malaria, he or she should be diagnosed
promptly and properly treated. Villagers must be
well informed and educated to be able to control
this menace.
